Common photo and print ratios
| Ratio | Common use | Example size |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | Square photos | 1200 × 1200 pixels |
| 4:3 | Many phone photos | 4032 × 3024 pixels |
| 3:2 | Camera photos, 6 × 4 prints | 1800 × 1200 pixels |
| 5:4 | 10 × 8 prints | 1500 × 1200 pixels |
| 16:9 | Widescreen displays | 1920 × 1080 pixels |
| 9:16 | Portrait screens | 1080 × 1920 pixels |
Resize or crop?
Resizing keeps the same shape. Cropping changes the shape by removing part of the picture. A 4:3 photo cannot fill a 3:2 print edge to edge without cropping or adding space around it.
To find a matching height, divide the new width by the original width, then multiply by the original height. For a 4032 × 3024 photo resized to 1200 pixels wide, the height is 900 pixels.
Pixels and print size
A ratio describes the shape, not the detail. At 300 pixels per inch, a 6 × 4 inch print needs 1800 × 1200 pixels. At 150 pixels per inch, it needs 900 × 600 pixels. Check the print provider's requirements before ordering.
